La encefalitis por virus West Nile, un flavivirus transmitido por picaduras de mosquitos que infecta a numerosas especies de vertebrados, entre ellos a los caballos y al hombre, ha adquirido una notable importancia en los últimos años debido a su expansión geográfica desde las regiones endémicas en África hacia Europa y Norteamérica. En Europa, en la actualidad, coexisten fundamentalmente los linajes genéticos 1 y 2 del virus West Nile, junto con del virus Usutu, muy similar al virus West Nile incluso en su rango de hospedador, lo cual complica aún más la situación ya que, tanto para el diagnóstico como para la vigilancia de estas enfermedades es necesario distinguir entre estas tres variantes de flavivirus. El Grupo de Enfermedades Emergentes y Transfronterizas del Centro de Investigación en Sanidad Animal (CISA) del INIA ha desarrollado una prueba que permite distinguir rápida y eficazmente estos tres flavivirus.
